Drs. Kristen Farris and Tricia Burke are conducting a research study examining how family members communicate about medical decision-making.
The ultimate goal of the study is to take the findings and create a family-centered decision aid that will help families navigate medical decision-making conversations.
Who can participate?
You may participate if you are currently an adult patient, a family member of an adult patient, or a parent-caregiver of a child patient. You must be at least 18 years or older to participate.
What does participation involve?
Participation involves an initial screening survey (approximately 5 minutes) and recording a conversation about an upcoming medical decision. We anticipate the conversation to take approximately 20-25 minutes. During your conversation, we ask you to address the following questions:
What specific medical concern, issue, or condition the decision is about.
What both people are considering to help them make the decision.
What decision both people are leaning toward and why.
Keep in mind, your participation is voluntary, and you may skip any question or stop the interview at any time. All information will be kept confidential, and your name will not be used in any publications or presentations.
You will also be asked if you are interested in participating in Phase II of the study, which involves completing an additional online survey after recording and submitting your medical decision-making conversation. There will be a separate informed consent process and additional incentives if you choose to participate.
What will I receive from participating?
Participants will receive a virtual gift card for $10 for the submission of the audio conversation.
